This book reveals much more of Ryan’s story, and it’s a story that needs to be told. There are sides to him that never really come to the forefront of the show, mainly because only so much can be condensed into twenty-two minutes. For anyone who wants to understand the reasons behind his involvement with Paranormal State, as well as more about the investigations themselves, this book is crucial. I believe that one reason for the show’s success is that Ryan did not pursue Paranormal State for the attention or even the monetary incentives it offered.
At some point we had to roll the dice. The family dynamic also seemed complicated for a twenty-two minute show. As Shelly indicates in the episode, the Seighmans’ marriage was troubled. They also had an older child, Rachel, who was wheelchair-bound. She was suffering from a debilitating terminal illness that left her in an infant state. We agreed that since she didn’t seem central to the haunting, there was no need for Rachel to appear on-camera. In the end, we went ahead with the case. New as I was to the whole process of discussing a case in terms of what made a good show, I soon learned that what might be considered risky one day, like shooting with children, could become standard the next.
When it began, we were mostly interested in gathering evidence, proof. As I came in contact with more clients who were under duress, the focus shifted more toward trying to help. Failing to find a murderer aside, I learned there were other real ways to help, one of which was just believing what people had to say. There’s a huge taboo against openly discussing otherworldly experiences. People are afraid to talk about their experiences for fear of being judged, losing their jobs and families, or being discounted as crazy and getting locked up in some institution.
