Some remains of the fort can still be seen at its site just off SR 363. By the early 1800s St. Marks had become an important shipping port. The Tallahassee Railroad Company built one of the state’s first railroads, from Tallahassee to St. Marks, in 1837. Mules pulled the cars. Today that route has been converted into the Tallahassee–St. Marks Historic Trail, a Rails-to-Trails project. Fishing, kayaking, bicycling on the St. Marks Historic Trail, and eating oysters are the main reasons people come to St.

The Faber pencil company had a mill on nearby Atsena Otie Key. But then, in 1896, a hurricane decimated the region. The pencil industry left, and Cedar Key regressed to a sleepy fishing village. Eric Jungklaus opened Tony’s Seafood (named for his brother, who helped him build the restaurant) in 2005. It occupies the lower floor of the historic circa-1880s Hale Building at the west end of Cedar Key’s main street, 2nd Street.

Com. Atlas Oyster House and its sister restaurant the Fish House, next door, are both part of the local Pensacola restaurant group Great Southern Restaurants. Great Southern also operates Jackson’s Steakhouse and Palafox House, a special-events venue. In addition, they operate Great Southern Cafe in Seaside (see the “Seaside” section). Pensacola native, chef, and co-owner of Great Southern Restaurants Jim Shirley opened the Fish House in 1998 and Atlas Oyster House in 2002. From the diner’s perspective, Atlas Oyster House and the Fish House essentially function as one large restaurant.
