Another means of measuring coating adherence is the bend test. In this test the coated sample is bent until the coating begins to spall from the substrate. This test is also used to determine embrittlement effects in the substrate caused by the coating [55]. Various impact tests have also been developed for evaluating coating adherence and cohesion. One common type of test is the ballistic impact test where an air rifle is used to propel a steel pellet at the coating surface [55]. Generally this type of test is quite qualitative since it measures the amount of coating remaining after impact by recording the degree of electrical conductivity through the sample, or the amount of substrate surface area exposed.
