In other words, Claims 2 and 3 are theorems, as it were, of the axiomatic body of rational-choice theory. As the reader will notice, in this book there is nothing but rational-choice theory in a very orthodox version. This is not because I reject other types of approaches.

Social scientists do not have a privileged access to human behavior, beyond the layperson’s reach. Counterintuitive results may be artifacts of a poorly contrived theory. They should only be accepted after the theory itself has been subjected to serious scrutiny. In fact, a good criterion for choosing a theory is the degree to which it can make sense of our everyday intuition. It may teach us something we would not know from mere intuition, but we should be cautious if the theory does serious violence to it.
